Curtains vs Roman Blinds: Cleaning and Upkeep Compared

Roman blinds and curtains are both fabric, so it is reasonable to assume they clean the same way. They do not. A curtain is essentially a hanging panel of cloth. A roman blind is a constructed object — fabric stiffened with battens, threaded with cords, running through rings and mounted on a headrail — and that construction dictates almost everything about how it can be cleaned and how it ages.

Two Very Different Objects

Curtains hang free. They move with air, they can be taken down in minutes, and they can be handled as a flat piece of fabric. A roman blind folds into horizontal pleats when raised, held in shape by rods or battens sewn into pockets across the back, with cords running vertically through rings to a locking mechanism. Every one of those components reacts differently to water, heat and handling, and none of them can simply be washed.

How Each One Gets Dirty

Curtains soil fairly evenly, with concentrations at the header where dust settles and along the hem where it meets floor-level air and the occasional shoe. Roman blinds soil in a distinctive pattern: the horizontal folds act as shelves, catching dust along every crease line. Raise a neglected roman blind and you often see clean bands where the folds were compressed and dark lines exactly where each fold sat. That banding is the first sign that a clean is overdue, and it is far more visible than the gradual overall dulling a curtain shows.

Everyday Maintenance

Curtains want a monthly vacuum with an upholstery head, working top to bottom. Roman blinds should be vacuumed fully lowered, so the folds are open and the accumulated dust in each crease is actually reachable — vacuuming a raised blind cleans the outer face and leaves the shelves untouched. It is also worth raising and lowering a roman blind fully every few weeks even if you do not use it, which keeps the cords running freely and stops permanent creasing at the fold lines.

Why Roman Blinds Cannot Be Washed

This is the crucial difference. Even where the fabric would tolerate washing, the assembly will not. Timber battens swell and warp, metal rods can rust and stain through the face fabric, the interlining loses its body so the blind no longer folds crisply, and the cords shrink at a different rate to the fabric — which throws the whole blind out of level so it hangs crooked and never sits square again. Stripping out all the hardware first is possible in principle but is a rebuild rather than a clean.

The Practical Cleaning Methods

Curtains have real options: onsite steam, take-away processing, solvent cleaning, or a careful cold wash for simple unlined panels. Roman blinds have effectively one: low-moisture cleaning done in place with the blind lowered, using controlled steam or a dry-solvent treatment applied fold by fold and extracted immediately. The technique is closer to upholstery cleaning than to laundry, which is why blinds cleaning is quoted and scheduled separately from curtain work.

Stains and Spot Treatment

On a curtain, a spot can be treated with the fabric supported and the surrounding area feathered out, so the treated patch blends. On a roman blind the fabric sits over battens and interlining, so any moisture applied to the face can wick through to the internal layers and leave a visible outline once it dries. Spot cleaning a roman blind demands very restrained moisture and constant extraction, and there is far less margin for a second attempt.

Sun Damage and Fading

Both fade, but roman blinds fade unevenly. A blind left half-raised for months develops a hard line where the exposed lower section has bleached and the folded upper section has not, and no cleaning corrects that. Curtains fade more gradually along the leading edge, and because they can be swapped between windows, you can even out the exposure. Varying the height a roman blind rests at is the closest equivalent, and it is worth doing on north and west-facing windows.

Repair and Longevity

Curtains fail slowly and forgivingly. Hems can be redone, header tape can be replaced, a lining can be renewed while keeping the face fabric. Roman blinds have moving parts, and cords are the usual failure point — they fray where they pass through the rings, and a snapped cord means restringing the whole blind. Ring stitching pulls out, and a warped batten cannot be straightened. It is normal for a roman blind to need mechanical attention before its fabric is worn out.

Cost Over the Long Run

Per unit, roman blinds are usually cheaper to clean than full-length lined curtains, simply because there is less fabric. Over a decade the picture narrows, because roman blinds need cleaning slightly more often to stay presentable — the fold banding shows sooner — and they accumulate restringing and hardware costs that curtains never incur. Curtains carry higher per-clean costs but a longer serviceable life and cheaper repairs.

Choosing for the Room

  • Kitchens: curtains generally win, because grease-laden fabric benefits from a full clean the blind cannot have.
  • Bathrooms: roman blinds, provided they are synthetic and the room is properly ventilated.
  • Bedrooms with allergy sufferers: curtains, which can be steam sanitised thoroughly.
  • Small or awkward windows: roman blinds, for the space they save.
  • Homes with pets: curtains, since hair and dander are easier to extract from an open panel.
  • Formal living areas: curtains, for the softer drape and the wider range of restoration options.

Keeping Both in Good Order

Plenty of homes have both, and the sensible approach is to clean them on the same visit while treating them as separate jobs with separate methods. Curtains can be steamed in place while blinds are lowered and treated fold by fold, and everything is back in service the same day — which is how most whole-home home cleaning visits from Fresho Curtain Cleaning are organised.
